The
new Quicktionary II Reading Pen is a revolutionary
hand-held, pen shaped, high resolution scanner with advanced
text-to-speech-technology. It functions as an educational
tool, providing "assistive technology" to people with reading
difficulties and students of English-As-A-Second Language.
Unlike PC-based high-tech reading aides, Quicktionary II
ReadingPen is completely portable and enables user to
see and hear the scanned text.
Scanned
words are displayed in large font and are clearly pronounced
- automatically or at the click of a button using Lernout
& Hauspie, advanced "Text-to-Speech" technology. The built-in
loudspeaker and earphone jack enable external and private
listening. With the aid of an easy-to-read menu, the user
can control volume, pitch and speed at which the word will
be read aloud. The definition and syllabic breakdown of the
word can be viewed at the push of a button.
The
Quicktionary II ReadingPen contains over 200,000 definitions
from the American Heritage College Dictionary Third Edition,
and recognizes over 400,000 words, including inflected nouns
and verbs. It provides idioms, etymology, phonetic representation
(utilizing the International Pronunciation Alphabet), parts
of speech, alternative spellings and examples of usage.
In
addition to its ability to scan inverted and hyphenated text,
the Reading Pen remembers the last 75 words scanned and can
recall, pronounce and define them again. The product also
is adjustable for left or right-handed users. It uses and
comes complete with two "AAA" batteries, a user
manual, quick reference, earphone, card carrying case (plastic)
with opticard.
